Tamaqua board discusses athletic insurance

Tamaqua Area School District will Alternatives to the payment of interscholastic athletic insurance were up for debate at Tuesday night’s Tamaqua School Board meeting.

Currently, the school-issued insurance would work as secondary coverage in cooperation with the student’s own insurance as a way to help cover the costs involved for treatment.

An estimated $45,000 is spent each year on athletic insurance for about 450 students.

“It’s unlikely to be offered during the 2018-19 school year as a benefit,” said Superintendent Raymond J. Kinder.

Members discussed the possibility of covering a certain percentage of the injured student’s medical bill, but ultimately leaned toward ending the coverage overall. The board also plans to notify the parents of their student-athletes before plans are officially set into place.

Members approved the first reading of a policy that would cover the standard operating procedures for people authorized to use weapons in regard to the hiring of armed officers to protect students throughout the school day.

Although the school’s security board is still looking into the specifics of this issue, the policy’s first reading was approved.

Other items discussed during the previous meeting that have been approved by members for the 2018-19 school year include:

• Tamaqua Area Booster Board’s small game license.

• School uniform stipends.

• A $19,992 grant from Lehigh Carbon Community College toward the school’s Second Step Curriculum.

• Donations of $2,500 from the Eastern Schuylkill Recreation Commission and $3,500 from the Tamaqua Library.
