Cause of fire at church remains under investigation

The cause of a fire that leveled a church in the West End Monday morning in Chestnuthill Township remains under investigation.

The incident occurred around 12:30 a.m. at the Full Gospel Tabernacle Bread of Life Church at 3078 Route 115 (corner of Mountain Laurel Drive) in Effort.

A fire marshal was called to the scene, according to West End Fire Company Deputy Chief Bob Geyer.

Contacted Tuesday afternoon, Geyer said five vehicles were found on the property with tires slashed.

Geyer said the fire marshal was continuing the investigation on Tuesday, and had not come up with a determination at that time.

He said the matter remains under investigation.

Geyer said the fire was fully involved when firefighters responded, and that it appeared to have started somewhere in the back of the structure, before it spread to the roof.

No one was injured during the incident, he said, adding that firefighters were on scene for about three hours.

Also assisting were the Polk Township Fire Company, Jackson Township Fire Company, Tunkhannock Township Fire Company, Blue Ridge Fire Company and West End Ambulance.
