Update: Body of missing swimmer recovered from Lehigh

Emergency crews recovered the body of a missing swimmer Saturday morning in the Lehigh River in Lehigh Gorge State Park.

The swimmer was reported missing at 5:30 p.m. Friday. Crews searched until 9:30 p.m. Friday, They  found the body Friday night but crews couldn't get to it, Carbon County Coroner Robert Miller said. Search crews resumed operations this morning.

 According to emergency dispatch reports, a man was pulled under the water near the bridge trestle and bystanders lost sight of him.

Miller said the man is from New Jersey.

Jim Thorpe Fire Department was already nearby from the top of Glen Onoko Falls. An injured hiker was found conscious and alert, according to scanner reports.

Lehighton Fire Department’s Dive Team was called to the scene, with help coming from Mahanoy City, Ryan Township and Whitehall teams. A robot with a camera attached was used to search for the missing swimmer.

A representative from the Carbon County coroner’s office was on scene, as well as the Carbon County Emergency director and Lehigh/Lausanne department.

“At this point, it is a recovery,” said Jim Thorpe Fire Chief Vince Yaich.

The injured hiker was taken by ambulance to a local hospital, Yaich said.

This is the second drowning this month in the same section of the Lehigh River.

Angel Rivas, 24, of Hazleton, drowned on June 19.
