Police have identified the driver in a chase that ended in downtown Lehighton Tuesday afternoon.

Hector Rentas, 26, of Easton, was wanted on multiple arrest warrants, and is expected to face a long list of charges in connection with Tuesday’s pursuit.

Rentas allegedly led police on a chase through Franklin Township and Weissport borough, before an officer successfully disabled his vehicle near Col. Jacob Weiss Park in Lehighton.

According to police, multiple drivers on the northbound Northeast Extension (I-476) noticed a black Audi driving erratically Tuesday and called 911. One of the 911 callers followed the car as it exited the turnpike at the Route 903 exit, turned left onto Route 903 south and then turned onto Maury Road.

Troopers were never in pursuit of the vehicle on the turnpike.

A Franklin Township police officer was made aware of the vehicle and waited in the area of Indian Hill Road. He saw the suspect vehicle pass in the opposite direction. The officer then activated his lights and siren and began to pursue the vehicle through the township, into Weissport borough, and eventually into Lehighton. Near the intersection of First and South streets, the officer was able to pin the Audi into a utility pole.

The officer approached the vehicle and observed the driver attempting to eat marijuana. After a short struggle he was taken into custody, and identified as Rentas.

Rentas was wanted on warrants out of Northampton County as well as a state warrant for violating parole. He was transported to a state prison to be held on the violations.

Franklin Township Police said they plan to file a long list of charges against Rentas, including fleeing and eluding police, DUI, and attempting to destroy evidence.
