Jim Thorpers plan Wine and Wheels fundraiser
The Jim Thorpers Bicycle team will be taking over a winery on Saturday evening.
The team will be holding its second annual Wine and Wheels fundraiser from 5-10 p.m. on Saturday at the Blue Lizard Vineyard and Winery in Andreas.
“They let us take over the winery for the night every year,” said Charlie Whitehead, a team member and one of the organizers of the event.
Your entry fee gets you a wineglass compliments of Blue Lizard Winery and four wine tastings. Live music will be provided by the duo Colin and Kuhla.
This year the winery corked 200 special bottles with custom Jim Thorpers labels. There are 100 bottles of a sweet white grape wine which the winery calls Niagara, which features the Jim Thorpers logo designed by Sarah Stidham of Jim Thorpe on the label. There are also 100 bottles of red Zinfandel with the unusual name, “Uncork, Unwind & Celebrate,” featuring this year’s logo of the Tour de Shore. Both labels had to be approved by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau.
Brian Seitz, an owner at the winery, said that the winery will give a percentage of all sales to the Jim Thorpers.
There will be food available for purchase from multiple vendors, including the Krazy Chicken Lady and Skipper Dippers food trucks as well as a selection from Kowalonek’s Kielbasy Shop. Wine and beer will also be available for purchase.
The Jim Thorpers Bicycle team is a group of more than 150 riders who will make a 65-mile trip from Philadelphia to Atlantic City at the end of July. The ride raises money for various children’s charities and the families of fallen first responders. In recent years about $85,000 has come back to this area to help children and families of first responders.
