Jim Thorpe honors Boy Scouts for community work
Jim Thorpe Borough honored members of Boy Scout Troop 555 at its June 14 council meeting for recent volunteer efforts in the community.
At the Jim Thorpe Memorial on Route 903, scouts removed the original signs; sanded, primed and painted them; and then replaced them along with some new brackets and mounting hardware.
“This troop took on another project as they have done for us many times over the last several decades or longer,” Council President Greg Strubinger said. “They have been such a pillar of the community and hope they keep going strong.”
According to Borough Manager Maureen Sterner, the troop will also be tackling painting of the fire hydrants in the municipality.
“They are color coded for the pressure,” Sterner said. “That is why you see that they all have yellow bottoms but the top, or bonnets, are different colors.”
Another upcoming scout project is the repair/replacement of stairs at the Liberty Monument. While it is still in the planning stages, that is intended to be an Eagle Scout project.
At last week’s council meeting, scouts Anthony Ward, Noah Rodgers, Jonah Coit, Danny DeMarco and Owen Acker; and scout leaders Dan Ward and Vince Rodgers, received certificates of appreciation for their efforts.
The borough also donated a Norman Rockwell print to the troop.
“They continue to bring great young men into the troop and have a good thing going,” Strubinger said.
As a last surprise for the troop, council presented members with a $1,000 check to purchase tents.
