HOPWOOD (AP) — State police say a man armed with a blade ignored repeated commands to stop before he was shot and wounded by a trooper over the weekend in western Pennsylvania.

Capt. Joseph Ruggery told reporters Monday that the man ignored at least five warnings to stop, saying “shoot me” as the trooper continued to back away before firing at about 4 p.m. Sunday in South Union Township.

Authorities said 29-year-old Kenneth Shaffer Jr. was hit in the chest but is expected to survive and will face charges of aggravated and simple assault, reckless endangering and resisting arrest. Court documents don’t list a defense attorney and a listed number for Shaffer couldn’t be found Monday.

Fayette County District Attorney Rich Bower will review the investigation to determine whether the shooting was justified.
