Lehighton Band to host first of three concerts
The Lehighton Band will kick off its summer concert series with a Flag Day concert.
In honor of Flag Day, the concert will be held at 8 p.m. Thursday in the Lehighton Upper Park amphitheater. The concert will include patriotic numbers, as well as other enjoyable musical selections.
The band will start the concert with the playing of the national anthem, followed by a rendition of “America the Beautiful” arranged by Bill Moffit.
The overture for the evening is a contemporary piece of music by Lennie Niehaus titled “Morro Bay.”
The band will continue the concert with show tunes from the musical “Hello Dolly.”
Next, the band will present a patriotic medley “Red, White and Brass,” which shows off the band’s brass section. Jamaican Sailaway will transport the audience to a tropical island with its catchy tune.
The next number by the band will be “Hollywood Milestones.”
Next will be “Sabre Dance” by Khachaturian, which is a fast-paced song that was originally written to show the prowess of dancers with sabers.
Back in the 1980s, Marla Gibb starred in the TV show “227.” The title song to this show is “There’s No Place Like Home,” a very entertaining piece of music.
“Mountain King Swing,” which is a swing version of Edvard Grieg’s “In the Hall of the Mountain King,” will follow.
The concert comes to a close with James Swearingen’s “Of Time and Change.” followed by “You’re a Grand Old Flag” to once again celebrate Flag Day.
The band is under the direction of Bradly R. Cressley, with Barry Gangwer acting as emcee for the program.
The Lehighton Band will present a total of three concerts. The two remaining summer concerts will be held at 8 p.m. on July 12 and Aug. 16.
All concerts are free to the public. A freewill offering will be accepted.
