Auxiliary election

The American Legion Post 927 Auxiliary officers election will be held at 6 p.m. today at the post home in Gilbert. The organization’s regular monthly meeting is set for 6 p.m. June 13.

The West End Home Association will meet at 7:30 tonight and the Legion itself will meet for its monthly meeting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Fire company

West End Volunteer Fire Company Chief Don Zipp reports that the fire department responded to 57 calls for service in May. This places the volunteers at 236 calls for the year.

Additionally, the West End Fire Company received its two new Kubota machines for wildfire fighting. They are part of a grant they received with Jackson Township. An LSA grant was received for a total of three machines with equipment for wildfires. West End received two and Jackson received one.

Eldred board

The Eldred Township board of supervisors will meet at 7 p.m. today at the municipal building in Kunkletown.

The Veterans Commission is seeking new members. Any veteran in good standing or spouse of a veteran may apply.

VBS registration

Cornerstone Community Church in Kresgeville has begun its online registration for its Vacation Bible School, which will be held from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. July 8-12. Call the church at 610-681-3534.

The theme is Time Lab VBS. Children from age 4 to beginning sixth grade in the fall are being invited and asked to come join in discovering Jesus from eternity past to eternity future.

Children will be able to enjoy inventors science and crafts, cool contests, high-voltage songs, games and snacks.

Cornerstone is located in Kresgeville next to the Pleasant Valley Elementary School on Polk Township Road.

Mission meal

A West End Mission Meal will be provided at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Gilbert from 4:40 to 5:45 p.m. Thursday.

Free signing class

Pleasant Valley Assembly of God Church in Brodheadsville has announced its new four-week, free, American Sign Language class beginning this week.

The class will be held on the following Thursdays: June 7, June 14, June 21 and June 28.

Classes will take place from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

Anyone who would like to join this free class is asked to sign up in the Connect Center this Sunday or contact the church office at 570-992-6799.

Eastern Star meets

The Monroe Chapter Eastern Star will hold a stated meeting at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Rimrock Masonic Center on Rimrock Drive in Bartonsville.

Seniors menu

The Senior Center for the Chestnuthill group will be able to order chicken Verona for this Friday’s hot lunch and barbecued chicken sandwich for next Wednesday.

The order for lunch must be placed by 11 a.m. the day before with the site manager at 570-242-6770.

In regard to seniors, an Elder Justice Day will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 15 at the Hughes Cancer Center in the Serenity and Tranquility rooms, as hosted by Lehigh Valley Health Network — Pocono, to which older adults of Monroe County, as well as their families and caregivers, can attend a free, conference-style venue, which will include presentations and discussions by professionals and experts on critical elder abuse topics facing older adults in Monroe County, as well as local community vendor tables and representatives, information and more.

A lunch is included in this free event, but seating is limited so registration is required.

Carwash fundraiser

The youth of Zion Lutheran in Brodheadsville are having a fundraiser car wash from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday.

Effort pantry

Effort UMC’s ministry of its food pantry, the Supplemental Food Resource Center, continues Saturday. It will be open from 10 a.m. to noon.

A valid driver’s license or state ID with address proving residency in the West End is required when asking for help with a need.

Pickup time

Those who ordered preordered turkey dinners via Salem-St. Paul’s church in Kresgeville are reminded pickup time is 4 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

Two services

St. Matthew’s UCC in Kunkletown will have its two services this Sunday. The first is at 9 a.m., the second is at noon. It is a noon special alternative worship.

Confirmation held

Zion Lutheran, Brodheadsville, will hold Confirmation at its 10:30 a.m. worship service Sunday.

Riders meet

The American Legion Riders have their monthly meeting at 10:30 a.m. Sunday at the American Legion Post 927, Route 209 and Fairgrounds Road, Gilbert.

The group is well-known for its charitable work, which has raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for local children’s hospitals, schools, veterans’ homes, severely wounded service members and scholarships, and they enjoy riding.

Moving-up day

This Sunday is the last day of class for Effort UMC’s Body Building and Sunday school program. The moving-up ceremony will be held at the 11 a.m. service on Sunday.

The Basement Bunch will resume in September and the Seekers Bible Study Group will also become active again then.

Strawberry festival

Salem UCC in Gilbert is holding its annual strawberry festival from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday.

There will be barbecues, salads, and strawberry desserts and music by the John Hamby/Southern Comfort Band, as well as a cakewalk and social interaction.

New service

Pleasant Valley Assembly of God Church, Brodheadsville, has begun a new service time on Sundays.

In addition to the 9 and 11 a.m. services, the church now has an 8 a.m. service as well, in addition to its 9 and 11 a.m. Sunday services and a 7 p.m. Wednesday service.

No children’s ministries will, however, be offered at the 8 a.m. time.

Mah Jongg group

On Mondays at 11 a.m. the Mah Jongg group meets at Western Pocono Community Library to play a few rounds. This group is not for those who want to learn; this is a group for experienced players. For more information or to join in the group, contact the library at 570-992-7934.

Knit & Crochet

The Knit & Crochet group of Zion Lutheran will meet at 1 p.m. Tuesday to ply their skills.

Korean vets

The Korean War veterans meeting will be held at the Legion Post Home in Gilbert at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

OTH meeting

Operation: Touch of Home will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the American Legion Post 927, Route 209, Gilbert.

It is the organization’s 2018 annual meeting for the election of the board of directors and more.

Submarine vets

The U.S. Submarine Veterans, Pocono Base, meets regularly on the third Wednesday of each month at the Wilson Fisher American Legion, Post 413, Old Route 940, in Pocono Pines. They are a local chapter of the national organization U.S. Submarine Veterans Inc. The purpose of the organization is to perpetuate the memory of shipmates who gave their lives in the pursuit of their duties while serving their country. Submarine veterans from all eras are encouraged to join.

This month’s meeting will be at 5 p.m. Thursday, which is Flag Day.

Wine tasting benefit

From 1 to 4 p.m. June 16, there will be a benefit event for the Leash-Free Dog Park at the West End Regional Park at the Blue Ridge Winery in Saylorsburg.

It will include five tastings, a complimentary wineglass, a winery tour with winemaker Randy Detrick at 3 p.m. and basket raffles as well as the music of George Baier from 2 to 4 p.m. The singer/songwriter covers hits from the ’60s through today along with original tunes.

Help requested

Western Pocono Community Library’s children’s department is asking for help in collecting a few supplies for the weekly programming needs and to prepare for the Summer Program: SummerQuest … LIBRARIES ROCK! which begins June 19. Supplies will be collected throughout the summer.

The items needed are: empty toilet paper and empty paper towel cardboard tubes, please do not flatten; clean, empty canisters with plastic lids, all sizes (breadcrumbs, ice tea, flavored drink mix, oatmeal, chips, cookie tins, coffee, etc.); clean, large plastic soda bottle and milk carton caps.

Donors are asked bag and label contributions SummerQuest and bring them to Western Pocono Community Library at 131 Pilgrim Way, Brodheadsville.

Fine arts class

The Pocono Arts Council is hosting a Summer Fine Art Camp for children ages 9-14, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. July 16 to 20 at the Pocono Heritage Center, 104 Mountain View Drive, Tannersville.

This five-day program will include, but is not limited to, drawing and sketching, painting with acrylics and watercolor, mask making, foil art and printing.

Instructor for the program is retired art teacher and local artist Suzanne Werfelman. Tuition is due upon registration with the deadline for registration June 29.

Students should bring lunch and a snack.

Camping experience

Camping in the West End Regional Park for a family experience is taking place from 2 p.m. July 21 to 10 a.m. July 22.

This is a family camping experience and all tents must have an adult. Campers are asked to bring their own sleeping bag (bedding), lawn chairs and snacks.

Tents and all other camping gear will be provided. Limited equipment is available.

Learn how and why to establish a campsite, build a fire, types of food to pack, meal preparation and proper bedding.

Activities to be included: intro to archery, nature hikes, make glow worms, star gazing and s’mores.

The menu includes hot dogs, burgers, baked beans and potatoes and pancakes, sausage, scrambled eggs, and toast for breakfast.
