Music in Park program to start 5th year Sunday
The Lansford Alive Events Committee will resume its summer concert series on Sunday.
The program, known as “Music in the Park,” will be celebrating its fifth year. The program is held in Kennedy Park at the gazebo at the west end of the borough near the Panther Valley football stadium, and will run each time from 6 to 8 p.m.
Concerts will be held every Sunday through the end of August. Admission is free, and refreshments will be sold. All proceeds from the concession stand sales will benefit the revitalization of Kennedy Park. The Lansford Alive Committee is a nonprofit organization made up of all volunteers.
The group is chaired by Marie Ondrus and Irma Leibensperger, who came up with the idea for “Music in the Park” to give borough residents a meeting place to enjoy music and fellowship at the end of a hard week of work.
Since the beginning of the series the committee, using profits from the concession stand, have made improvements in the park, which include the removal of dead trees and shrubbery while trimming and pruning the existing ones. Park benches were painted and garbage cans added to help keep the park clean. The 40-year-old miners monument was power-washed and refurbished.
The Lehigh Navigation Coal Cart was also restored to its original form with the help of the Carbon County Career and Technical Institute in Jim Thorpe.
Future projects include updating the park’s electrical outlets and fuse boxes; replacing the roof on the gazebo; repairing and repainting the banisters in the gazebo; installing carnival lights for better visibility as well as a tent for times when it rains. The concert schedule through July will be:
• June 3: Buddy Musselman, South Tamaqua; acoustic southern country blues
• June 10: Blue Mountain Buccaneers, Blue Mountain; classic rock, country, folk
