Tamaqua firefighters were honored at the Tamaqua Volunteer Fireman’s Relief Association’s 89th annual memorial service on Sunday evening at New Life Assembly of God Church. New Life Assembly Pastor Ed Noftz headed the service.
There, members of the three town fire companies — The American Hose Company No. 1, East End Fire Company No. 4 and South Ward Fire Company No. 1 — commemorated the deaths of 15 fire company members in 2017.
“These people were close to everyone’s hearts gathered here,” Noftz said of the 15 men. “I know it’s hard for you and the community, but I’d be remiss if I didn’t also offer my thanks to (firefighters) today.”
The firefighters remembered at the service of the American Hose are: Lewis A. Boyer, Lewis Erbe, Thomas H Hadesty, Michael Hosak, Bruce Johnson and Timothy Knorr. The firefighters remembered at the service of the East End Fire Company are: Gregg J Boyle, Dale Griffiths, James F. McGlinchey, Sheldon L. Shafer and Clement J. Tracy. The firefighters remembered at the service of the South Ward Fire Company are Cyrus Haldeman, John Marcin, Thomas J. McGrath and James A. Valentine.
“When we think of Memorial Day, we think of those who put their lives on the line every day and remember those who have lost their lives in the service of others. It means so much to us as a community — all your sacrifices and the lifestyle you lead are appreciated by all,” Noftz said.
