A look back: May 17, 1958

Considerable excitement preceded the birth of a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Ernest Dotter, 279 W. Broadway, Jim Thorpe, at 10:03 a.m. today in the Nesquehoning ambulance while en route to the Coaldale Hospital.

The baby’s mother was being rushed there in the Diligent Hose Co. ambulance when trouble developed on a tire a mile east of Nesquehoning. John Hartman, driver, and Francis Smith, assistant, made radio contact with the Civil Defense, and arrangements were made to transfer the patient to Nesquehoning.

Hartman remained in the ambulance with the patient, and midway between Nesquehoning and Lansford, he officiated as the infant, Barbara Ann, was born. They arrived in Coaldale 10 minutes later.
