Panther Valley on red alert after bullet found on property

Panther Valley Junior-Senior High School was placed under a red alert for several hours Friday after a spent bullet was found in a girls’ locker room.

The alert was put out before 10:30 a.m. after school officials were made aware of the bullet, according to a statement from Panther Valley School District Superintendent Dennis Kergick.

It was the second time in two months that administrators locked down the school due to a bullet found on school property. On March 18, a bullet was found in the cafeteria following a lockdown drill, but no other suspicious items were found.

Carbon County Emergency Management Agency as well as police from Summit Hill, Lansford, and a K-9 unit from Pennsylvania State Police all responded to conduct a sweep of the building.

The search revealed nothing else of a suspicious nature. The lockdown was lifted around 1:30 p.m.

The school was not able to serve lunch as result of the red alert.

Kergick thanked the local agencies who responded, including Lehighton Ambulance.

“Most of all, special thanks to our students, staff, parents and guardians of our junior-senior high school students for their patience and understanding. We take these matters seriously and safety will always be our priority,” Kergick said.
