Nine area students have been chosen to receive a $1,500 scholarship courtesy of the Bo Tkach Under The Helmet and Hat Foundation.

The students were honored Wednesday night at a dinner following the foundation’s annual gold tournament at Blue Shamrock Golf Course in Palmerton.

Candidates do not need to be athletically or academically talented, but do need to be extraordinary in other ways. The recipients are well-rounded, community-minded, and have a sincere concern for others.

Faculty members at the individual schools choose the scholarship recipients.

Alyssa Stamets

Carbon Career and Technical Institute

Although every student has some involvement in community service, Stamets volunteers for many organizations, whether it’s sports, student groups or other events at school. Staff at CCTI describe Stamets as a take-charge person who demonstrates strong leadership and organizational skills. She is involved in Interact Rotary Club, DECA, Student Forum and National Technical Honor Society. She also coaches elementary-age children and is a drum major.

David Citro

Lehighton Area High School

When an injury ended Citro’s senior football season, he expanded his love of photography and began taking pictures at sporting events and sharing them publicly. His positive attitude, Lehighton’s staff said, helps make the school a better place.

Lucas Boyle

Jim Thorpe Area High School

Throughout his high school career, Boyle maintained a very high grade-point average. He is currently involved in National Honor Society, Student Council, Student Forum, Future Business Leaders of America and Students Against Destructive Decisions.

Jim Thorpe’s staff described Boyle as having a developed sense of priorities and displaying a very responsible work ethic.

Sarah Berube

Marian Catholic High School

Berube is a peer listener who has notably advocated for those who may need assistance. She is active in numerous school clubs and organizations at Marian as well as in her church parish. Marian’s staff said Berube passionately cares about the well-being of others, both children and adults. Sarah is active in Students Against Destructive Decisions and Marian’s Advocates for Students with Disabilities.

Trevor Hoffman

Northern Lehigh High School

Not only is Hoffman a standout athlete on the field, but Northern Lehigh’s staff said he most resembles Bo in terms of his work ethic and personality.

He maintains a 4.04 cumulative grade-point average.

One of Hoffman’s teachers said about him, “Trevor is an all-around Bulldog. He is a hard worker, always smiling with a positive attitude. He represents the community in exactly that way.”

Austin Stasko

Northwestern Lehigh High School

Stasko is described by Northwestern’s faculty as a stupendous individual with strong values/morals.

His positive mannerisms, they added, are consistent in all facets of his life.

He has years of service in school sports, clubs and community volunteering efforts. Stasko was recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program as a 2016 Commended Student.

Kyle Kralik

Palmerton Area High School

Kralik was nominated for the scholarship by a Palmerton teacher who said he is a lighthearted and caring person who wishes to make those around him happy.

Even as a freshman, Kralik was always making conversation with whoever he sat next to and was eager to welcome the new guy or girl.

Kralik is active in varsity sports including football and wrestling, student council and other clubs. He is also first in line to participate in school spirit activities.

Robin Krajir

Panther Valley Senior High School

Krajir is a four-year member of the school’s softball and volleyball teams as well as a two-year member of the girl’s basketball team. She is also a member of Student Council and National Honor Society.

According to Panther Valley’s staff, she is described as quiet, kind and hard working.

She is well-liked by her peers, coaches, faculty, staff and administration.

Johnathan Arthur

Weatherly Area High School

Genuine, honest, respectful and liked by all are just a few of the ways Weatherly’s staff described Arthur.

He has consistently displayed positive attributes gaining the love from everyone around him.

While he has hardships more than others in his life, Weatherly’s staff said, he still represents all that is good.
