Visitors attend reception at newly formed historical society
Preserving history and culture for future generations.
That’s the motto of the newly established Jacob’s Weissport Historical Society, and for good reason.
The historical society recently held a coffee/tea and dessert reception at Jacob’s UCC Church in Weissport.
Those who attended were able to preview various historic Weissport artifacts and memorabilia in a dedicated display space at the church.
Born and raised in Weissport, Bob and Roxanne Leffler said they enjoyed revisiting some of the town’s history.
“I think it’s neat,” Bob said.
Roxanne added, “It’s nice to see the old days.”
Jake Boyer, director of the historical society, said the event served as a “sneak preview.”
“It’s to introduce them to, and make people aware of, Weissport’s heritage,” Boyer said.
James Oldt, a collector from Lehighton, generously donated antique Weissport bottles to the borough.
Oldt said that every bottle was found outside Weissport, and from as far away as Hazleton, Nesquehoning and Tamaqua.
He said countless miles were walked, tons of soil slowly moved and almost 20 years invested for just 16 bottles.
“This is how rare some of our history is, and why it needs to be saved,” Oldt said. “I have decided to donate all my local finds to help this cause, and to get this stuff in one place so it can be enjoyed and appreciated by our residents.”
Oldt said the bottles represent a piece of the town’s history.
“We should be proud of our hometown and what we have accomplished, and if seeing these bottles helps our morale, then it was worth everything it took to find them,” he said. “I commend Weissport for getting something started, and I hope you all enjoy these bottles as much as I have looking for them most of my life.”
Sandy Putkowski, president of the historical society, said the group is looking for anyone who would like to add any historic documents or memorabilia to the collection either through a donation or loan.
Boyer said the historical society plans to hold a Heritage Day event at some point in the near future.
