A New York state resident is facing several charges after he led police on a high speed chase after a traffic stop in Monroe County.

State police at Stroudsburg said the incident began at 1:57 a.m. Saturday along Hamilton Road East, in Hamilton Township, when troopers stopped a Mercury Milan for an equipment violation. Police ran the registration and learned it was a dead plate which was registered to a Ford. The driver then gave the name of Alex Jovaney Cuas.

Troopers also detected the odor of alcohol and marijuana coming from the vehicle plus other indicators of criminal activity. Police asked the driver to get out of the vehicle. Troopers said he lit a cigarette, then drove away at a high rate of speed.

The driver fled south on Hamilton Road, leading police on a chase that lasted for about three miles with speeds in excess of 100 mph.

The driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed near the intersection with Rimrock Drive. He ran away but was eventually caught by troopers.

The driver was then identified as Richard Rosario, 41, of New York. A check indicated he had an active warrant through the U.S. Marshals service. Rosario then became uncooperative and combative with EMS and troopers at the scene. He was taken to the Lehigh Valley Hospital - Pocono, East Stroudsburg, for a medical evaluation and treatment.

He then was taken into custody and charged with driving under the influence, fleeing and eluding police, flight to avoid apprehension, resisting arrest, false ID to law enforcement and other criminal and summary charges. He was placed in the county prison in Snydersville.
