Local Sports Roundup: Results from April 26

The Lehighton and Northern Lehigh softball teams recorded impressive wins on Thursday.

In baseball action, Marian rallied for a win, while the Palmerton and Lehighton tennis squads also picked up victories.

SOFTBALL

Moravian-Northern Lehigh

Kaitlin Hoffman hit three home runs, and Lauren Hoffman also hit one to power Northern Lehigh to a 15-0 Colonial League win over Moravian Academy.

K. Hoffman hit two of her homers in the first inning, when the Bulldogs scored nine runs, and finished with five RBIs.

L. Hoffman was 3-for-4 with two runs and three RBIs. Shyanna Williams (2-for-4, three runs, two RBIs), Adde Warmkessel (2-for-3, run, RBI) and Paige Hude (2-for-3, three runs) also had big games for Northern Lehigh (10-2).

The win clinched a District 11 playoff berth for the Bulldogs.

Lehighton-Jim Thorpe

Lehighton rolled to a 15-0 Schuylkill League Division 1 victory over Jim Thorpe.

Ryanne Hoffman paced the Indians’ (4-9, 3-5) attack, going 4-for-4 with two RBIs and two doubles, while Kendra Peterman was 2-for-2 with four RBIs. Heidi Greene (triple, three RBIs) and Samantha Gruber (double, two RBIs) both added two hits.

Gruber allowed one hit, striking out eight without surrendering a walk.

Christy McLean’s single was the Olympians’ (0-13) only hit.

Marian-Nativity

Nativity rallied for a 2-1 Schuylkill League win over Marian.

Trailing by a run heading to the bottom of the seventh, a hit and an error put two runners on base for the eventual winners. An error on a double-steal attempt allowed both runners to score for the walk-off victory.

Mia Nemeth had two hits and an RBI for the Fillies (7-5; 4-4). Lyndsey Reinoehl allowed just three hits and struck out five.

Pleasant Valley-Emmaus

Emmaus jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 9-0 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win over Pleasant Valley.

Maddy Clark was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a run scored for the Hornets, who led 7-0 after two innings.

The loss dropped Pleasant Valley to 4-8.

BASEBALL

Pine Grove-Tamaqua

A seventh-inning rally helped Pine Grove top Tamaqua, 8-7, in Schuylkill League Division 1 play.

Jacob Bohr and Jacob Leininger each had two hits apiece for the Cardinals, who scored twice in the top of the seventh to take the lead.

Casey Rother (double, RBI), Matt Minchhoff (home run, two RBIs) and Isaiah Kupchinsky (double) all had two hits for the Raiders. Nate Boyle drove in two runs.

The loss dropped Tamaqua to 5-6 overall, and 3-4 in the league.

Nativity-Marian

A big sixth inning lifted Marian to a 12-9 Schuylkill League win over Nativity.

Matt Doherty was 4-for-4 with a double and a run scored, while Aaron Mason went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI for the Colts, who scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to erase a 9-8 deficit.

Alex Kubishin was 2-for-4 with a home run and three RBIs, and Max Nolter also added a homer. Ryan Cappel and Nick Goff each chipped in with a double and an RBI.

Marian improved to 8-5 overall and 5-3 in the league.

Notre Dame edged Northern Lehigh 3-2 in a Colonial League contest.

Steven Luke was 2-for-2 with two RBIs and two walks for the Crusaders, who built a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Luke came on in relief with two outs in the top of the seventh inning to close out the game and earn the save.

Aaron Rudolph and Gio Colon both had two hits for the Bulldogs (4-9; 4-8). Zach Long was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

Pleasant Valley-Emmaus

Emmaus posted a 4-0 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win over Pleasant Valley.

Wyatt Hensler, Brandon Robinson and Evan Marushak all had two hits apiece for the Hornets.

Danny McEvoy, Trevor Knappenberger, Dallas Greenzweig and Collin Stivala collected hits for the Bears (7-5).

Minersville-Panther Valley

Panther Valley managed just two hits in dropping a 6-2 Schuylkill League contest to Minersville.

Justin Mahalchick pitched six innings for the win, striking out five.

The only hits by the Panthers (5-6, 2-6) came from Brad Buzzard and Jake Taras.

The Indians swept both doubles matches. Tyler Steigerwalt and Nate Petit-Clair won in straight sets at No. 1 singles, while Bryce Smith and Sarah Bradley recorded a 6-4, 6-7, 7-2 win at No. 2 doubles. Gavin Cressley had a 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 win at No. 3 singles for Lehighton.
