Tamaqua Remembers

Next Tuesday, May 1, marks the beginning of a monthlong series of events commemorating the 150th anniversary of Memorial Day.

The Tamaqua Remembers Committee will kick off the month with a “Night of Honors” event in the area of the Tamaqua American Legion, Nescopec and Broad streets.

Beginning at 6:30 p.m., learn more about the American bald eagle from the Carbon County Environmental Education Center. At 7 p.m., a patriotic mural will be unveiled and Nescopec Street will be renamed. The Italian American Band of the Lehigh Valley will provide musical entertainment.

U.S. Navy Capt. John H. Lea III, who is currently serving on the staff of the Navy Chief of Chaplains in Washington, D.C., will be the guest speaker, while retired Col. Hank Steinhilber, U.S. Army, will offer the opening invocation and benediction.

Day of prayer

The Tamaqua Ministerial Association will observe the National Day of Prayer on May 3 with a community breakfast and time of prayer.

Breakfast will be served, beginning at 9 a.m., in Founders Hall at Trinity United Church of Christ, 22 Lafayette St.

Following the meal, participants will move to the parking lot which overlooks the Borough of Tamaqua and offer prayers for the various areas of American society and culture.

Several members of the ministerial association will be offering the prayers.

The public is welcome and freewill offerings will be accepted to help defray the cost of breakfast.

Any excess funds will be donated to the Tamaqua Hunger Walk.

St. John Lutheran

The Rev. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at this Sunday’s 9:15 a.m. worship service in St. John’s Lutheran Church.

Also on Sunday, bells will meet at 8 a.m.; church council will hold a special meeting after the worship service, Confirmation and Sunday school classes meet at 10:30 a.m.

Activities for next week include: Thursday, angel choir rehearses at 6 p.m., shepherd choir meets at 6:30 p.m. and the chancel choir practices at 7:30 p.m.

St. Peter’s Union

The Rev. Kenneth Buckwalter will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Sunday at St. Peter’s Union Church in Mantzville. Sunday school classes meet at 10:15 a.m.

Also on Sunday, the junior choir will rehearse at 11 a.m., Confirmation class meets at 11:15 a.m., Boy and Girl Scouts will meet at 6 p.m.

Next week’s activities include: Tuesday, prayer group meets at 5 p.m., worship and music committee meets at 7 p.m.; Wednesday, cherub choir rehearses at 6:30 p.m., senior choir meets at 7 p.m.

Zion Lewistown

Pastor Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service this Holy Grounds Sunday in Zion Church, Lewistown Valley. Coffee and pastries will be available before the service.

Sunday school will be held at 9:15 a.m.

Bible study sessions are held at 12:30 p.m. every Thursday.
