Chestnuthill works to identify source of explosions

An explosion was heard and felt in Brodheadsville at 7:14 p.m. Tuesday, just as Chestnuthill Township supervisors were discussing the issue.

Residents of Chestnuthill Township have been reporting hearing and feeling explosions on and off for the past 18 months.

The township supervisors have determined that the explosions are from the use of binary targets, also known as explosive targets. The product is often sold under the brand name Tannerite.

Tannerite is legal to sell and to possess in the United States. The supervisors are working with the Pennsylvania State Police to determine exactly who is using the targets and if they are being used within to legal guidelines set out by the ATF.

The area of use has been narrowed down to Silver Valley Road in Brodheadsville.
