Gladys Schantz celebrates 100 years

Gladys Gertrude (Eck) Schantz recently celebrated her 100th birthday.

She was born March 21, 1918, in Allentown to Morris E. and Gertrude (Fegely) Eck.

On June 26, 1937, Gladys married Harold J. Schantz.

They have two children, Gerald Schantz and Jacqueline (Schantz) Sperlbaum.

She worked for Rodale Electric for two years. Otherwise, she worked as a housewife.

They lived in Allentown until 1950 when they purchased the Ironton Hotel. After selling the hotel in 1965, the moved back to Allentown.

In 1970 Gladys and Harold moved to Kunkletown. Harold passed away on Sept. 29, 1994. A year later, Gladys went to live with her daughter. She lived in Parryville and then Walnutport until moving to The Summit, where she lives now.

Gladys had four sisters: Edith Morris, Margaret Clauser, Joyce Shive (half-sister) and Gladys Herman (half-sister). All are deceased.

She has five grandchildren: Sonya Tripp, the late Jeffrey Sperlbaum, Brian Schantz, Trina Carter and Lynnea Dengler.

She has 10 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.
