Jim Thorpe reviews truck parking

Tractor-trailer parking is under the microscope in Jim Thorpe borough following the latest complaint from a resident.

Police Chief Joe Schatz told council he heard from a resident concerned about tractor-trailer parking on borough streets, where spots can already be at a premium.

The borough currently has no ordinances in place regulating where tractor-trailers can park.

“We have had truck drivers actually come to us and ask us where they can park to not be a nuisance and we have them park behind Memorial Hall,” Schatz said. “We actually have two currently parking back there now. I spoke with the driver in this case in an attempt to come up with a resolution, but we got a complaint again this month.”

Jim Thorpe Solicitor Jim Nanovic said different municipalities handle tractor-trailer parking in different ways.

Lehighton borough, for example, has an ordinance prohibiting tractor-trailer parking on streets.

“Their ordinance also deals with vehicles of a certain length,” Nanovic said. “Municipalities usually deal with issues on a case-by-case basis and if that doesn’t work, then you can look at developing an ordinance.”

Council President Greg Strubinger said he doesn’t want to see anyone with a hardship.

“I can see it from both sides,” Strubinger said. “The residents have a concern. We have the trucks park here and we have athletic fields right next door. At the same time, truck drivers are trying to make a living.”

For now, Schatz said he would reach out to the driver of the truck at the heart of the most recent complaint and see if a resolution can be reached.

“If it comes to it, maybe we have to look at doing a plain and simple ordinance, but I think we should be looking at alternative places for drivers to park these trucks,” council Vice President Jay Miller said. “Those drivers are our citizens too and they deserve that from us.”
