N. Lehigh seniors to graduate June 8

Northern Lehigh High School seniors may want to mark June 8 down on their calendar.

Superintendent Matt Link discussed the Act 80 application process with the school board on Monday.

Link said students must have at least 180 days of instruction and high school students must have the 180 days of instruction and not less than 990 hours per academic year.

Because of the number of snow/bad weather days this winter, he said seniors would not have met the required number of days, though they are good on the number of hours.

As a result, Link said the district requested an Act 80 Day waiver so that it can reclassify some teacher in-service days so the seniors can graduate on the target day of June 8.

The board then agreed to have Link apply for an Act 80 Waiver for high school seniors for the 2017-18 school year, with two full days for in-service for staff development held on Jan. 15 and March 9.

Since then, Link said the district received a response that the state Department of Education approved the waiver request, meaning the graduation commencement ceremony will occur on June 8.

However, he noted that students kindergarten through 11th grade will have to attend school on June 11 and June 12, while the teachers’ last day will be June 13.
