Tamaqua Memorial Day observance to feature concerts

The month of May will be filled with a variety of music in Tamaqua as the monthlong observance of Memorial Day will feature several concerts, including a performance by “The Jolly Tars,” a musical duo specializing in Civil War ballads, hymns, marches and the music of the 19th century.

The “Tars” will perform as part of what is being billed as Veterans Appreciation Day at the Tamaqua Station Restaurant, May 17, a day when veterans and their families will be given a 10 percent discount on food purchases. The duo will play during the evening hours, but the discount is available from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Hailing from the Lehigh Valley area, the duo is composed of Jake Laubach and Ken Purcell, performing together since 2012 as the “Jolly Tars.” In addition to the Civil War era music, the men also specialize in seafaring songs such as shanties from America and the British Isles.

The station restaurant is located at 18 N. Railroad St., Tamaqua. Reservations are suggested and may be made by calling 570-668-3800.

Other musical performances during May will include: May 1, Italian American Band of the Lehigh Valley for opening ceremonies; May 15, the Third Brigade Band of Pottsville will play at the East End Park, beginning at 7 p.m. Free refreshments will be served; and 7 p.m. May 23, Cressona Band at the platform at the Tamaqua Station Restaurant.

The monthlong series of events is being planned by the nonprofit, all-volunteer Tamaqua Remembers group. To help defray expenses, the group is selling T-shirts; tickets to win a patriotic quilt raffle, crafted and donated by Tammy Dean; wreaths and bunting. Volunteers will be at Boyer’s Food Mart on Cedar Street Tamaqua, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 7.
