Schuylkill commissioners open bids for roof project

Replacing the roof of the Schuylkill County courthouse annex came into sharper focus Wednesday as commissioners opened bids for the project.

Commissioners expect to award the job on April 11.

The bids were from Houck Services, Linglestown, Dauphin County, which bid $270,400; TRS Roofing, Williamsburg, Blair County, $311,400; Budget Renovations & Roofing, Shamokin, Northumberland County, $168,951; and Spotts Brothers, Schuylkill Haven, $218,460.

County Administrator Gary R. Bender said the cost came in higher than the approximately $122,000 anticipated. The roofing will be paid from budgeted capital project funds.

The annex roof has been leaking, primarily over the office of Judge John E. Domalakes. The replacement will be another rubber roof, which will also be insulated.

Also in commissioners’ sights is repairing the main courthouse’s original slate roof, which is 128 years old.

In other matters, commissioners gave county engineer Lisa Mahall approval to seek bids for the interior demolition, including vinyl asbestos tile removal, at the county human services building at 410-420 N. Centre St., Pottsville.

Bids will be received at the county controller’s office until 3 p.m. April 30.

The bids will be opened in the commissioners’ board room at 9 a.m. May 2, with a tentative award date of May 9.

The renovation project is being engineered by Y. Kim Architects, Pottsville.

The county in 2016 hired McClure Co., Harrisburg, for $832,540 to replace the windows, roof and air conditioning units.

The county wants to move its mental health and drug and alcohol agencies and the office of District Judge James Reiley to the building, which previously housed the county Children & Youth Services Agency.

The agency in 2016 moved to a nearby renovated building that offered more room.

The mental health and drug and alcohol agencies and district judge currently are in leased buildings. Moving them to the former human services building will save $100,000 a year, Bender has said.
