Carbon man admits fleeing crash scene, DUI count

A Carbon County man admitted fleeing an accident scene and a drunken driving charge last Thursday in the county court.

He pleaded guilty before President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II.

Michael Halulko, 30, of Palmerton, pleaded to one count each of flight to avoid apprehension (felony 3), DUI, driving under suspension and possession of drug paraphernalia. He also pleaded to a second DUI and possession of drug paraphernalia count for an incident on Aug. 26, 2017, when Palmerton police responded to a crash report along Franklin Avenue. Halulko was driving a vehicle that crash and he then fled the scene. At the scene officers found drug paraphernalia in the vehicle.

He previously pleaded to another DUI and drug count before Judge Steven R. Serfass. In that case he was arrested on March 3, 2017, along Route 209 by Lehighton police. A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance.

Halulko, who is an inmate in the county prison on the charges, admitted to a long-term drug abuse problem.

On the flight to avoid apprehension charge he was sentenced to serve one day less one year to one day less two years with credit for 79 days already served.

On the March 3 DUI he was sentenced to serve 72 hours to six months in jail, a fine of $1,000 and one-year license suspension. On the drug charge he was placed on probation for a year, concurrent to the DUI charge.

On the second DUI he was sentenced to serve six months to five years in jail, a fine of $1,500 and license suspended for 18 months. On the driving under suspension charge he was fined $200 and costs.

All the jail terms run concurrent.

He must also pay court costs of about $1,000, a $50 per month supervision fee while on parole or probation and follow any recommendation of the D&A evaluation.
