On This Date: March 28, 1967

March 28, 1967 — Panther Valley’s school board, on a 6-3 vote, hires Joe Pilconis as its new head football coach. Pilconis, who held the same position at Mahanoy Area for 21 seasons, was PV’s line coach the year before and helped the Panthers post a 9-1 record. Pilconis, who will earn $1,000 for the job, had winning seasons in 13 of his 21 years at Mahanoy. After a solid career at Temple University, Pilconis played in 32 games for the Philadelphia Eagles. His son, Bill, was an All-State player at Panther Valley.
