Cat shelter seeks volunteers for race weekend

Do you like NASCAR?

Would you like to help at a race while also helping an area animal shelter?

Carbon County Friends of Animals is looking for volunteers to help with a new fundraiser that pairs the cat shelter with racing.

The nonprofit group recently announced that they are in need of volunteers to work at the Pocono Raceway on race weekends in exchange for receiving $90 per person to help cover shelter costs.

“All we have to do is volunteer our time,” said Kimmy Mulik, a board member of the shelter. “We know it may long, hot days, but if we work as a team we believe we can make this a success and we can bring in some nice money for our furry family.”

Volunteers who work a minimum of two shifts also can camp at the racetrack for free. Camping information will be distributed to volunteers closer to the events.

CCFOA is looking for five to 10 volunteers a day each four-day race weekend. Pocono 400 is May 31 to June 3; Gander Outdoors 400 is July 25 to 29; and IndyCar ABC Supply 500, Aug. 16 to 19.

Volunteers do not have to be members of CCFOA, Mulik said, adding that the person would just need to sign the group’s volunteer contract.

Teams will be led by a CCFOA board member, shelter worker or longtime volunteer during the events.

Volunteers who choose to work an event must commit for the whole day, Mulik added. The day begins at 7 a.m. and will conclude at approximately 7 p.m., pending weather and the race. Positions are filled based on the needs of the event.

For more information on the opportunity or to volunteer, email ktweet@ptd.net or call Dana Dunbar at the shelter at 570-325-9400.
