Kunkletown native dies in York building collapse
STAFF AND WIRE REPORTS
A Kunkletown native was killed Thursday after the partial collapse of a former piano factory in York.
York Mayor Michael Helfrich said Thursday that firefighters Ivan Flanscha and Zachary Anthony died Thursday after being transported to York Hospital. Two other firefighters were injured.
Anthony was a member of the Polk Township Fire Department before joining York Fire Department, according to Chief Billy Tippett.
“We regret to announce the passing of past firefighter Zachary Anthony. Firefighter Anthony lost his life battling a fire in York today as a member of the York Fire Department. Please keep his family, friends and fellow firefighters of York in your prayers during this time of sorrow,” Polk Township fire department posted on its Facebook page Thursday night.
Anthony, who had been with the department since August 2010, graduated from Pleasant Valley High School in the class of 2007, according to social media reports.
He then attended Florida State Fire College, graduating in the class of 2008.
Flanscha was a decorated 20-year veteran of the York City Fire Department.
York officials say part of the four-story building fell on the firefighters as they were looking for hot spots and investigating the cause of a fire that broke out Wednesday at the former Weaver Organ and Piano factory. The building was being converted into residential units.
Helfrich said Assistant Chief Greg Altland and firefighter Erik Swanson were in stable condition and being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
“This is the worst day in my career, this is the worst day for the York City Fire Department,” Fire Chief David Michaels said in a press conference. “We are totally overwhelmed.”
Anthony, who joined city fire department in 2010, was a “fun-loving guy,” a fire official said, adding “he was awesome,” the York Daily Record reported.
