6 students charged in fight after game

Six high school students have been charged for their roles in a fight that broke out after a District 11 Class 2A semifinal boys basketball game last month in Pottsville.

Pottsville Bureau of Police said in a release that disorderly conduct charges have been filed against the male juveniles who ranged in age from 15 to 17 years old.

Of those, three are Marian Catholic High School students, while the other three are Panther Valley High School students, who were identified as being intentionally and actively involved in the spectator fight at Martz Hall.

The fight occurred in the stands immediately following the completion of the Marian/Panther Valley boys basketball playoff game on Feb. 27.

Police said school security broke up the fight, and police assisted on-site personnel with clearing the facility and preliminarily identifying the people involved in the altercation.

Panther Valley won the contest 52-49 to advance to the District 11 Class 2A championship game against Moravian Academy.

During the course of the investigation, Pottsville Bureau of Police officers met with administrators from both schools to review video of the incident and positively identify the students before citations being filed in District Court.
