A former high school social studies teacher admitted he had 250 images and videos of child pornography and pleasured himself to photos of students from his school, according to the woman who prosecuted him.

Northern Lehigh High School teacher Jonathan Defrain was sentenced Friday to two to four years in state prison plus three years of probation, according to Northampton County Assistant District Attorney Tatum Wilson.

Defrain, 37, of Walnutport, was a social studies teacher at the school for 14 years, Wilson said. He was also the monitor for student council and coached girls’ softball, she said.

Online court records show he pleaded guilty to possession of child pornography and possession of obscene materials. Some of the pornography depicted children under 13, Wilson said.

Police found videos of Defrain pleasuring himself to images of female students taken from yearbooks or sporting events, Wilson said. Police confirmed the images were of girls in Defrain’s school.

Jonathan Defrain is charged with sexual abuse of children.

Defense attorney John Waldron said Defrain was on track to become a principal before he was charged with the crimes. He will never be a teacher again and took up a new career as a house painter, Waldron said.

Waldron urged Giordano to keep Defrain out of prison.

“We tried to portray it as he had really lost everything and was punished enough,” Waldron said.

Waldron said Defrain cooperated with police immediately and turned over his computer when asked. He’s enrolled in therapy, Waldron said.

Waldron said Northampton County Judge Emil Giordano paused the sentencing hearing to weigh his request, but ultimately decided on the two- to four-year prison sentence.

No child ever reported inappropriate contact with Defrain, Wilson said.

Police were tipped off about the crimes when offending images were sent over yahoo.com.
