Pleasant Valley cancels school because of power outages

Pleasant Valley School District has canceled school Monday because of continued power outages. Both Pleasant Valley Intermediate School and Pleasant Valley Elementary are without power, as are many residents.

PPL crews continue to work on restoration efforts following Friday’s storm.

As of noon on Sunday, PPL reported 1,102 outages in Carbon County including 648 in Penn Forest Township and 148 in Franklin Township.

There are 2,800 customers waiting for power in Chestnuthill Township and 1,605 in Polk Township.

In Lehigh County, PPL reports 1,089 outages in Washington Township and 12 in Slatington Borough.

Schuylkill County is in far better shape, with only 314 reported outages.

Hundreds of additional line workers and tree crews are assisting in restoration efforts, PPL officials said.

“We’re working around the clock and are making good progress,” said Stephanie Raymond, vice president, Distribution Operations. “We know it’s not easy being without power. Our customers should know we are bringing in all available resources to restore their service.”

PPL is recalling about 25 linemen now doing storm restoration work in Puerto Rico so they can help restore customers to power in Pennsylvania, according to a news release.

Also assisting PPL are 100 contractors provided through its sister utilities in Kentucky — Louisville Gas & Electric and Kentucky Utilities. In addition, another 250 line workers are expected to arrive Sunday and Monday from utilities as far away as Florida, Texas, Ohio and Alabama.

The storm, PPL said, will rank among the 10 worst to affect its customers.
