A winter storm warning is in effect for the region, with heavy wet snow is expected. Total snow accumulations of 6 to 12 inches at elevations above 1,000 feet and 2 to 4 inches in the valleys.
Rain will transition to snow at the higher elevations in the Poconos and in far northern New Jersey early this morning. The transition in the valleys should take place by midday. The snow will be heavy at times today. Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are possible, especially in the higher elevations. The snow is expected to decrease in intensity this evening before ending overnight.
Plan on very difficult travel conditions. The combination of a strong northwest wind gusting to 50 mph and heavy snow could create near-blizzard conditions with the visibility falling below one half mile at times. The heavy wet snow and the strong wind will likely cause damage to trees and utility lines with power outages likely.
A winter storm warning for snow means that severe winter weather conditions will make travel very hazardous or impossible. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. The latest road can be obtained by calling 5 1 1.
