A Carbon County man was given a prison term on Friday after admitting he assaulted a fellow inmate at the county prison.
He entered a guilty plea before Judge Joseph J. Matika.
Eugene Anthony Kochan, 23, currently an inmate in the prison, pleaded to one count of simple assault for an incident on June 14, 2017, when he assaulted another inmate at the prison. A felony count of assault by a prisoner was dropped in a plea bargain.
Nesquehoning police responded to the prison for a report of an assault. Police learned that Kochan assaulted another inmate in his cell. The other inmate suffered injuries that required him to be taken to the Lehighton hospital for treatment.
Matika sentenced him to serve eight to one day less 24 months in prison. He also ordered him to get both drug and alcohol and mental health evaluations, render 75 hours of community service, attend and successfully complete anger management court, have no contact with the victim and make restitution to the county for $1,157.03.
Kochan is currently serving a prison term on other charges. He maxes out on those charges on Nov. 11. Matika ruled the new sentence runs concurrent with the sentence now being served.
