Another Day Dawns to collaborate with legendary songwriter in Nashville
Another Day Dawns will be heading to Nashville later this month, but fans of the hard rock band needn’t worry. These rockers aren’t going country. They’re just climbing another step on the ladder of success — maybe even two.
After a weekslong competition last fall that started with 2,000 musicians nationwide, Another Day Dawns was chosen to be in the top five to compete in Los Angeles in December for a recording contract.
They didn’t nail the top spot, but as they stepped off the stage at the famed Viper Room and were approached by not one, but two star makers, frontman Dakota McGeehan knew win or lose, the future was looking pretty good.
And not only is the future looking good, so is the band, thanks to new threads from Affliction.
“We didn’t win the competition, but just that we got to play in the Viper Room was a really big deal,” said McGeehan. “As soon as we got done with our set, we started going off the stage and were approached by the guy who told us he owned a small clothing line named Affliction. It’s only in a few states, and based out of L.A.”
McGeehan was familiar with the line, which is sold at Buckle in the Lehigh Valley Mall.
“They endorse really big bands,” said McGeehan, “plus their jeans are so nice. I’ve been wearing them since I was a little kid. I was excited. It was a really big opportunity.”
McGeehan said that after the band returned home from California, they were told to visit the Affliction website and for each of them to pick out a couple stage outfits, which they did. The clothing was shipped to his house.
“They call it a care package.”
The “care packages” have been coming for a couple of months now. When the band has a big show coming up, like when they open for Buckcherry April 13 at the Sherman Theater in Stroudsburg, or Queensrÿche on May 6 at Penn’s Peak, they contact Affliction and get to pick out new outfits from the website.
Which brings us to Nashville.
Also waiting for Another Day Dawns when they stepped off the stage in L.A. was legendary songwriter and music producer Desmond Child, who has written several chart-topping hits for bands like Bon Jovi and Aerosmith, and for solo artists like Katy Perry, Kelly Clarkson and Cher. In fact, if you go to his website, there are 11 pages of songs he’s either written, co-written or produced.
Soon, it may be 12.
“This is a really big opportunity for us,” said McGeehan. “One of the judges we performed in front of saw a spark in us or something. As soon as we got off the stage, he rushed over to us and said, ‘Whether you win or lose, I’m going to be working with you down in Nashville.’”
As a songwriter, McGeehan was already familiar with the music icon.
“About two days after the competition, he emailed me and said he was glad we got to chat. He gave me his phone number and a couple days after we got back, I got in touch. We’ve kept up on Facebook and Instagram.”
Child is about to make good on his promise.
On March 25, the band, which in addition to McGeehan, includes guitarist Tyler Ritter, bassist Livi Dillon and drummer Nick McGeehan (no relation to Dakota), leaves for Nashville, accompanied by two of their managers. They’ll be gone for six days.
“We’re going to go down there and probably start writing songs right off the bat, and then going around bumping elbows,” said McGeehan.
Troy Luckketta, the drummer from the hard rock/heavy metal band Tesla, will be showing the band around Nashville. Another Day Dawns opened for Tesla about six years ago at The Sands in one of their first big shows. He and Luckketta have stayed in touch.
“With Desmond, we’re on a strict schedule, but when we’re not with Desmond, we’ll hang around. I’ve never been to Nashville. He’s going to show us around.”
McGeehan said they’ll be bringing some of their original songs, but he doesn’t know if they’ll be polishing what he and Ritter have written, or starting from scratch.
“We’ve never been in this position before. We’re open to pretty much anything he says. He’s doing it out of the kindness of his heart, just for us to come down and see if we gel. For someone of his stature, he could be charging a couple hundred an hour, and I’m sure he does too, but this is something he wants to do for us.
“It feels amazing, to have someone like him to believe in us that much that he doesn’t want any money from us, it shows me and the guys that he believes in us and backs us up 100 percent.”
Before heading out, Another Day Dawns will be performing in their last local concert for awhile at Beltzville Bar and Grill, 7435 Pohopoco Drive in Kunkletown.
“It will be our send-off show,” said McGeehan. “We hope everyone comes out to see us off.
He also said the band has tickets available to their show with Buckcherry and Queensrÿche. Those interested can message Another Day Dawns on the band’s Facebook page, or contact any of the band members via their pages.
