Palmerton Area High School will host a pysanky making class to help send their Future Business Leaders of America students a state competition in the spring.
Kerry Palumbo and her sister Coreen Weilminster will teach a class and hold a workshop concerning the ancient art of pysanky, or Ukrainian Easter eggs.
The eggs are dyed using a wax-resist method, and feature intricate designs and various colors that all hold a special meaning.
The class will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on March 10 at the high school. Proceeds from the event will go toward alleviating the cost of attending the state competition for the students.
“Palmerton had 42 students qualify for the state competition, which is in April in Hershey. Out of the 42 that qualified, 38 will be going. That’s three days of meals, hotels and transportation that has to be paid for,” said Palumbo, who serves as the Palmerton Area High School FBLA co-adviser and Region 21 co-adviser.
The $35 fee will include a kit that contains a kistka, which is a stylus used to paint wax on the eggs, beeswax, a basic dye package and instructions. Eggs will be provided at the class.
Palumbo said that as of Tuesday, only 10 of the 20 seats for the class are still open.
To sign up for the course, call 570-778-2238, or email kpalumbo@palmerton.org.
