February has brought a lot of cold and snow to our area, making it the perfect time to add a little warmth through the Coming Together for a Cause Chili and Boilo Cook-Off at the East End Fire Company in Tamaqua.
This will be the sixth year for the friendly rivalry between two of Tamaqua’s volunteer fire companies, with all proceeds benefiting the Carbon/Tamaqua Unit of the American Cancer Society.
The rivalry between the East Enders and members of American Hose Company No. 1 turned into a community event when co-organizers Tom McCarroll and Brian Connely decided to combine forces for a good cause. Since the first event in 2013, the firefighters have contributed more than $20,000 to the ACS.
Last year’s event attracted a total of 30 competitors, each vying for a trophy and bragging rights.
Prizes are awarded for the best traditional and specialty entries in both categories.
The cook-off will be held Feb. 24, at the East End, 553 E. Broad St., Tamaqua.
Registration will begin at 11 a.m., with tasting from 1 to 5 p.m. There are a variety of registration and tasting packages available.
For more information or to preregister, contact Connely at 570-728-4743.
Chili and boilo are just what’s needed to ward off winter’s chill. This crowd enjoyed both at an earlier edition of the Coming Together for a Cause Chili and Boilo Cook-Off. This year’s event will be held Feb. 24 at the East End Fire Company, 553 E. Broad St., Tamaqua. Registration starts at 11 a.m. with tasting set to begin at 1 p.m. DONALD R. SERFASS/FILE PHOTO
