Resident asks W. Penn to ban 4-wheelers at night

A West Penn Township man has asked officials to pass an ordinance that would forbid people from four-wheeling at night.

Resident Gary Steigerwalt told supervisors on Monday people have been 4-wheeling on his property at 2, 3, and 4 in the morning.

“I just think it would help eliminate the problem,” Steigerwalt said. “They were doing it in the daytime hours, now they’re doing it at nighttime.”

Steigerwalt, who lives on a farm, said there have been instances of several people who have been poaching deer.

Board Chairman Tony Prudenti said he believes the matter is more of a police issue.

Board solicitor Paul J. Datte said he doesn’t believe the township can adopt an ordinance prohibiting anyone from 4-wheeling.

Datte told Steigerwalt that if he can see who the riders are, he can record it and tell police.

Township police Chief Brian Johnson said he would discuss the matter with the Pennsyvania Game Commission.
