Carbon County court — DUI
A Carbon County man was sentenced on charges of simple assault and driving under the influence on Thursday in the county court.
He was one of five defendants to appear before President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II to be sentenced, with all previously pleading guilty.
Palmerton incident
Ronald Strohl
, 64, of Palmerton, was arrested on the assault count on Oct. 23, 2017. Palmerton police were dispatched to the 400 block of Lafayette Avenue, for a reported domestic assault. On scene officers spoke with the victim, who said her boyfriend, Strohl, had grabbed her and pushed her to the ground and a few moments later grabbed her a second time and shoved her. Police noted signs of physical contact.
Strohl was arrested for drunken driving on June 12, 2017, by Palmerton police along Route 248. A test revealed a 0.16 BAC.
Strohl told the court he had stop drinking, adding, “I know alcohol has caused me a lot of problems.”
On the DUI count, Nanovic sentenced him to serve 30 days to six months in prison, a fine of $1,000, one-year license suspension and zero tolerance for the use of alcohol. On the assault count, he was placed on probation for a year, consecutive to the DUI charge, and ordered to have no contact with the victim or her family.
He will begin the jail term at 1 p.m. Feb. 7.
Other cases
Michael Thomas Lucas
, 51, of Lehighton, was sentenced to serve 30 days to six months in jail, a fine of $750 and one-year license suspension. He was arrested on April 30, 2016, along Gun Club Road in Towamensing Township by state police at Lehighton. A test revealed a 0.18 BAC. Lucas was involved in a two-vehicle crash.
He applied for placement in the Intermediate Punishment Program, house arrest, but was denied by the court on the recommendation of the adult probation office.
He will begin the jail term at 4 p.m. Feb. 9 and serve it on consecutive weekends.
Neil Dorshimer
, 34, of Lehighton, was sentenced to serve 90 days to five years in prison, a fine of $2,500 and 18-month license suspension. On a driving under suspension, DUI related, he was sentenced to serve 90 days in prison and a fine of $1,000. The jail terms run concurrently.
He was arrested on April 12, along Route 443 in Lehighton by state police at Lehighton. A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance. He was originally charged with eight counts.
He will begin the jail term at 6 p.m. Feb. 9 and serve it on consecutive weekends.
Alexander Kevin Dreher
, 28, of Lehighton was sentenced to serve 72 hours to six months in jail, a fine of $1,000 and one-year license suspension.
He arrested on Dec. 28, 2016, along Iron Street in Lehighton by state police at Lehighton. A test revealed the presence of a controlled substance.
He was given credit for 21 days already served and paroled.
Howard Obertubbesing III
, 55, of Emmaus, was sentenced to serve 60 to 90 days in jail on a driving under suspension, DUI related charge, and a fine of $500. He must serve the full 90 days.
He was arrested on May 17, 2016, by state police at Lehighton after being involved in a crash along Fireline Road in Lower Towamensing Township and leaving the scene. A charge of accidents involving damage to attended vehicle was dropped in a plea bargain.
He will begin the jail term at 7 p.m. Feb. 9 and serve it on consecutive weekends.
Each defendant must also pay court costs of about $1,000, a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole and follow any recommendation of their drug and alcohol evaluation.
