Carbon bar unveils portraits of judges
The Carbon County Bar Association conducted a portrait unveiling ceremony on Wednesday afternoon of the three sitting judges of the Court of Common Pleas.
Portraits of President Judge Roger N. Nanovic II and judges Steven R. Serfass and Joseph J. Matika were unveiled in Courtroom 1 before about 150 court personnel, family members of the judges, bar association members and the general public.
Attorney Keith R. Pavlack, chancellor of the county bar association, was master of ceremonies for the program and said the bar association decided to have the portraits of the three sitting judges made about six years ago. An extensive search was conducted to find an artist to fulfill the work. That person was Richard Quindry, a portrait photographer.
Quindry spoke briefly and thanked the three judges for allowing him the time to take photographs of them in preparation of the portraits.
The three judges all expressed their thanks to the bar association for the portraits. The three appeared to be very pleased with their portrait.
The three judges also thanked the court associated employees and their families for their help in performing their very important duties as a judge.
The county bar started commissioning portraits of judges in the late 1970s and early 1980s. The first portrait was of Judge Albert H. Heimbach. The second was of Judge James McCready, who preceded Heimbach on the bench.
Later portraits were unveiled of judges John P. Lavelle and Richard W. Webb. Last year a portrait of Judge David W. Abby was unveiled. All those judges are now deceased.
There are framed photographs of all the judges who have served in Carbon before McCready hung in the courtroom to the rear near the main entrance.
The children of Judge Serfass, Benjamin and Hannah, did the unveiling of the portraits. The invocation and benediction was pronounced by Clifford Eckhart, of the adult probation office.
A reception was held in the law library following the ceremony.
