Polk man charged with threats, guns confiscated

A Polk Township man who made threats to a property clerk in the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office has been arrested by county detectives.

Gregory S. Schlegel, 43, of 1269 Valley Road East, Kunkletown, was arraigned on Monday before Magisterial District Judge Kristina Anzini and released on $20,000 unsecured bail.

The arresting officer is Detective Mario Orlando of the county DA’s office. A preliminary hearing date has not been scheduled.

Schlegel is charged with threatening unlawful harm to influence, terroristic threats-intent to terrorize another and obstruction of the administration of law or other government functions.

Police said 16 rifles and four handguns were confiscated from Schlegel’s residence at the time he was taken into custody.

According to an affidavit of probable cause filed by Orlando, Schlegel telephoned sheriff’s office property clerk Gail Fouda on Jan. 11 regarding the pending Feb. 22 sheriff’s sale of his property. The detective said Fouda stated during her conversation with Schlegel, he asked her if she ever seen the movie “Braveheart,” telling her the man “goes crazy” in the movie. Schlegel reportedly told Fouda, “that’s what is going to happen if they take my house.”

Fouda told authorities Schlegel advised her, “Whoever is the first person to bid on my house, I’m going to take them out.”

He later told the clerk, “I’m an ex-Marine. I hit what I am aiming at.”

In a press release announcing the arrest, the district attorney’s office said, “”In light of highly publicized incidents of violence throughout the nation, the district attorney’s office takes threats of this nature seriously.”
