Blaze guts Thorpe home
A Jim Thorpe family has been displaced from their home following a fire Sunday night.
Firefighters from several communities responded at around 6 p.m. to the blaze at 707 South St. in the borough.
Fire Chief Vince Yaich said the matter was called in as a dwelling fire after the people inside the house reported their kitchen was on fire.

Upon arrival, Yaich said there was heavy smoke and fire to the rear of the property, and in a matter of less than five minutes, the entire structure’s second and third floors was fully involved.
Yaich said the husband, wife and daughter were inside the home when the fire broke out, but did not sustain injuries.
However, they lost two dogs to the fire, he said.
Yaich said the home is a total loss.

One firefighter from Summit Hill sustained a minor ankle injury, he said.
Yaich said a fire marshal was called in and verified that the fire started in the kitchen area while the family was cooking french fries and chicken tenders.
“The husband was taking a nap,” Yaich said.
“He said the smoke alarm got him up; when he came down to the kitchen, he said it looked like the whole kitchen was in flames.”
Yaich said firefighters were on scene for about 4½ hours.
“The guys did one heck of a job making initial attack on the fire,” he said.
“The mutual aid companies coming in were a great asset, to rotate men in and out and keep fresh personnel going in.”
Also assisting at the scene were Lehighton, Penn Forest, Nesquehoning and Lansford fire departments, as well as the Lansford and Summit Hill RIT team, along with Lehighton Ambulance and Mahoning Valley’s Rehab Unit.
