WILKES-BARRE, Pa. (AP) — Emergency officials are warning residents along the Susquehanna (suhs-kwuh-HAN'-uh) River in northeastern Pennsylvania to remain alert due an ice jam that has caused some flooding.

The Luzerne County emergency management agency says no flooding is expected in municipalities protected by the levee system, including Wilkes-Barre, Kingston and Forty Fort, but low-lying areas further downstream remain under a flood warning. Those areas include Plains and Plymouth townships, West Nanticoke and Shickshinny.

County Manager David Pedri warns that ice jams are unpredictable, and high water levels in Duryea, Exeter Township, Exeter, and West Pittston are expected.

Officials in West Pittston and Duryea recommended that some residents voluntarily evacuate their homes Wednesday, and West Pittston imposed a mandatory 9 p.m. curfew. Some schools in the area also dismissed classes early.
