How do you like your pizza?

Pizza is said to be one of the most popular foods in the world. And according to the website offers.com, it’s America’s favorite Super Bowl food (Take that Buffalo wings!)

Whether or not either of those statements are true, there’s no denying that pizza is popular. We asked followers on the Times News Facebook page about their favorite pizza and the response was pretty overwhelming.

While there were certainly those who like their pizza served the traditional way, with just tomato sauce and cheese, or maybe a hit of pepperoni or sausage, there were others who liked theirs made with a cauliflower crust and lots of veggies, or piled high with bacon, ham, pineapple or hot peppers.

It’s not unusual these days to have toppings one might not have thought of before.

Giant food market nutritionists suggest stepping out of the pizza box — way out.

Build a better pizza

For a healthier pizza version, start with the crust. Make your own out of dough make with whole wheat flour, quinoa or cauliflower, or use a portobello mushroom or sandwich flatbread instead.

Instead of tomato sauce, consider salsa, pumpkin or carrot puree, hummus or ricotta cheese.

When selecting cheese, go for one that has lots of flavor, like freshly grated mozzarella, Gorgonzola or feta.

Top your pie with chicken sausage or grilled chicken, beans, eggs, lox, nuts or seasonal produce, such as figs, apples, berries or grilled peaches.

And of course you should pile on the veggies. Try getting creative like the Rainbow Pizza.

Here’s what our readers had to say about how they like their pizza.

Healthy

Ginger Outlaw: Would be nice if someone had cauliflower crust pizza instead of dough which has carbs.

Melanie Moyer: I agree. Except I don’t love the cauliflower crust. Fathead crust is pretty good or just a crustless pizza would work for me. I hear great things about the crust made from chicken but haven’t tried that one yet.

(Heather shared the recipe she uses.)
