Siblings waive hearing in assault case

A brother and sister from Lansford waived their preliminary hearings in an alleged assault Thursday and were released from custody.

Ronald and Tina Dries were set to appear before Magisterial District Judge Casimir T. Kosciolek on charges including kidnapping to inflict bodily injury or terrorize a victim, a felony that could result in state jail time.

Ronald Dries’ public defender reached a deal where he would plead guilty to a misdemeanor charge in exchange for prosecutors not pursuing the felony kidnapping conviction.

The Drieses were arrested Jan. 2 for an alleged assault on Ronald Dries’ wife. According to court documents, the wife told police that on the night of Dec. 28, Tina Dries hit her over the head with a ceramic Nativity scene, and repeatedly slammed her head into the floor.

The alleged attacks occurred after the siblings were reportedly drinking at their East Bertsch Street residence.

The victim also told police that they prevented her from leaving the house by locking her in a bathroom and manipulating door locks in the house.

She reportedly left the home the next morning as Ronald slept and asked neighbors to call 911.

Police observed blood on her face and bruising and swelling on her head.

Prosecutors said on Thursday that they received more information about the incident and reached the agreement with Ronald Dries’ attorney.

Judge Kosciolek agreed to change their bail to unsecured — from $5,000 cash for Ronald and $1,000 cash for Tina — following the hearing, and they were released from custody.
