Weatherly takes no action on school construction plan

No action was taken on progressing the proposed construction plan by EI Associates during the Weatherly School Board meeting Wednesday night.

For the meeting’s public comment section, resident Chrissie Houser questioned the board on two subjects, the attendance of Gerard Grega and the proposed renovation plans discussed in November.

“Is Mr. Grega on or off the board? He hasn’t been here since August,” she said.

Board solicitor Daniel Miscavige said, “Under the school code, if a director misses two or more meetings the board can remove him, but if he is absent for health, work or serious reasons they are excused.”

Houser pointed out that Grega had not contacted the board.

“He did communicate his issues,” Miscavige said.

“There was talk of construction, switching the schools, what will happen with the kids during this process?” she asked.

Board President Girard Fewins said the subject is still under discussion.

“It’s still ongoing. No decision has been made. It’s being watched very closely,” he said.

Business Manager and board Secretary Peter Bard informed the board and residents on the progress of the 2018-19 budget.

A resolution to cap the tax increase to 3.1 percent was adopted. If the percent raise is enacted, the millage rate would rise 0.143 on top of the current rate of 45.96 mills for 2017-18. Last fiscal year the rate was raised 1.5 mills from 44.46 mills in 2016-17.

“The budget is still a work in progress and we are trying to keep a tax increase to a minimum,” Bard said.

The business manager said he “hopes to present the board with a budget in April,” saying it must be ratified by June 30.

“I want to give them some time to look at it,” he said.
