Slatington will search for new borough manager

The borough of Slatington will search for a new borough manager following the newly elected council’s reorganization last Monday.

According to newly appointed council Vice President Jason Ruff, filling the position is high on the to-do list of the new board.

“It is the priority to fill it with the right person, and proceed professionally, unlike the way the process proceeded in the past,” he said.

“We will most likely begin looking at all the details surrounding that position in the upcoming weeks and will take time to debate what that job description and experience looks like.”

During the meeting last week, councilman and former board President David Schnaars, made a motion to continue with Manager Judith Danko’s employment contract.

The motion failing to receive a second, died on the floor, leaving the position vacant.

Danko served as manager for one year in the borough office of Slatington. She had previously worked as Bath’s borough manager.

During her 12-month run, Danko was able to secure a $395,185 small water and sewer grant to update the aging sewer plant and worked closely with borough audit company Campbell, Rappold and Yurasits and accounting company Gurniak and Gurniak, to discover and rectify years of financial disorganization.

“Judith Danko was a hard worker and was very committed to progress in Slatington,” said Ruff.

“There were just other things at play that made people question whether or not she was the best fit for our borough,” he said.

Danko spoke at the end of the reorganization meeting, citing “infighting” for the end of her employment.

“There were certainly some colorful personalities on council,” said Ruff.

“The current council hopes to bring some professionalism and cooperation to the board moving forward,” he said.

The new board consists of write-ins Russell Hallman and Jared Kern, who replaced Mel Gildner and Jon Rinker, along incumbents Ruff and Bryon Reed.

Councilmen Joseph Wechsler and Schnaars’ terms will not expire until 2019.

“We ran a ticket of a balance between experience and fresh perspectives and I will personally see to it that progress and growth remain on the forefront of people’s priority list.”

The first official Slatington Council Board meeting will take place at 7 p.m. today in the borough hall.
