A high school student from Lehigh County is facing charges after allegedly making threats against his school on Snapchat.
Oliver Stewart, 18, of Salisbury Township, was charged Friday with terroristic threats, a misdemeanor, and a summary charge of harassment for messages that he posted online earlier this week.
According to a news release from the Lehigh County District Attorney’s office, on Thursday someone sent a screenshot of a post on the messaging app Snapchat to Salisbury High School administrators. The school had been closed Thursday because of inclement weather.
The school contacted local police, who investigated and found that Stewart had sent the Snapchat post.
District Attorney Jim Martin said in the news release that there was no known threat to students or staff.
He compared the case to another which occurred last month at Parkland High School, where two juveniles were charged for making threats against the school. In this week’s case, however, the suspect was over 18 years old and charged as an adult.
“Unlike other recent incidents involving alleged student threats, in this case, the student is an adult, so the Juvenile Act does not apply and more details about the incident itself, and the actor, may be released,” said Martin, who also thanked the Salisbury Township School District.
The case was investigated by Salisbury Township Police Department.
Stewart was set to be arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Michael Joseph Pochron on Friday. No further details were available.
