Carbon hires project manager Allentown firm to be paid $318,000

Carbon County Commissioners hired a construction manager Tuesday to oversee an office building and parking garage to be built on Susquehanna Street in Jim Thorpe.

Boyle Construction Management of Allentown received a contract totaling $318,000 for preconstruction services and construction administration services.

The new building will be constructed where an existing garage building and a parking lot are presently located.

The garage structure, which had been utilized for the county archives and by maintenance personnel, will be razed.

A construction contract is anticipated to be bid in the spring for the project, the commissioners said.

The archives have already been moved to a renovated office building at 15 W. Fourth St. in Jim Thorpe.

The new building will have parking on the first two floors and office space above that.

The financing for the new garage and office building is occurring with a $7.75 million bond approved last January.

In other action by the commissioners on Tuesday:

• An agreement was made with PenTeleData for the fiber circuit for Region ESInet/Phone Project with Monroe County. Other counties that are part of the project include Luzerne, Pike, Susquehanna, Lackawanna and Schuylkill counties.

The agreement is for three years with a monthly cost of $2,014. The cost associated with this agreement is covered under the 15 percent Interconnectivity Grant for the ongoing ESInet/Phone Project with Monroe.

The approval was given by a 2-0 vote of the commissioners with William O’Gurek abstaining.

• The commissioners entered into agreement with Axon Enterprise Inc. of Scottsdale, Arizona, for the purchase of Tasers for the Sheriff’s Department.

The agreement is for five years at a total cost of $9,775.65.

• Under the salary board portion of the meeting, the commissioners agreed to abolish the positions of nine summer laborers at a rate of $8 per hour.

The commissioners said they will continue to host the Liquid Fuels Summer Program but not as many personnel are needed.

• The salary board also approved the salaries of personnel in all the county’s row offices.
