Lehighton middle school presents holiday concert
The Lehighton Area Middle School Music Department will present its annual holiday program on Tuesday in the auditorium.
The fifth- and sixth-grade groups and the jazz ensemble will begin at 6:30 p.m. The seventh- and eighth-grade band and choirs will begin at 7:45 p.m.
Doors will open at 6 p.m. The snow date is Dec. 20. The concert is open to the public.
The Jazz Ensemble will begin the program with “White Christmas,” a classic written by American icon Irving Berlin, and featuring Isabelle Cressley, Zachary Wilusz, and eighth-grader Callie Hayman. The jazz ensemble will follow with a rockin’ selection titled “Hark, Those Herald Angels Rock,” featuring Nicholas Passiglia, a seventh-grade saxophonist.
The fifth- and sixth-grade band will follow with the “Deck the Holidays” arranged by Rob Romeyn. Next, they will perform the 1950s classic “The Little Drummer Boy,” which was famously reworked by David Bowie and Bing Crosby in the 1970s. The band’s final selection will be a medley titled “Christmas on the Farm.”
The Treble Chorale, consisting of fifth- and sixth-graders, will conclude the first half of the program. The chorale will perform a spunky original entitled “Old Man Winter.” Next up will be “Snow Is Falling Still,” which blends new material with the song “Still, Still, Still.”
An abridged version of Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride” will be next, followed by a Brian Setzer-inspired piece called “Zoot Suit Santa.”
The fifth- and sixth-grade ensemble, band and chorus are under the direction of Thomas Weidner.
The seventh- and eighth-grade portion of the program will begin with the show choir, Music Express, under the direction of Laura Welkey.
This ensemble will perform a medley called “Christmas on Broadway” arranged by John Higgins. “We Need a Little Christmas,” “Toyland” and “My Favorite Things” are just some of tunes you will hear in this collection.
The Choraliers, the seventh- and eighth-grade chorus, also under Welkey’s direction, will open their portion of the program with the “Christmas Waltz” by the songwriting team of Sammy Cahn and Jules Styne. “Hotta Chocolatta,” arranged by Kirby Shaw and made famous by Ella Fitzgerald, will be their second selection. Callie Hayman will accompany the chorus on Andy Beck’s “The Snow Begins to Fall.”
Their final selection will be “Holiday Lights,” which will include an exciting visual component.
The seventh- and eighth-grade concert band, under the direction of Beth Hudlow, will conclude the evening’s festivities. Their first selection will be “Two French Carols” by John Edmondson, followed by “How the Grinch Stole Christmas Concert Medley” arranged by Michael Story.
For its final selection, the band will perform a singalong called “Songs of Christmas Cheer.”
