For Denise Martinez, the “Project Warm and Cozy,” is a random act of kindness.

“It’s something to help myself feel better. It just touches my heart,” she said.

At noon Saturday, Martinez, creator of the Caring DAM Hearts organization, is asking anyone with gently used or new scarf, hat or gloves to bring those winter items to one of two locations for donation to the local homeless.

“It’s so heartbreaking to see them, especially to see children out on the streets. They are out there,” she said.

Martinez said the idea has been on her mind since she began her recovery from heart surgery over a year ago.

“This August was the anniversary of my surgery and this just makes my heart feel good.”

During her post-operation recovery time Martinez said she meet a homeless woman who helped her become inspired to give back to the community.

She began volunteering at The Parish of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Allentown, working to help the homeless population.

Since the word about the donation collection has gotten out Martinez says the donations have been piling up.

“The response has been tremendous, there has been an outpouring from family and friends this week,” she said.

“The prayer group from church donated 25 hand-knit hats and other organizations in Slatington have come together for me. I’m just in awe,” she said.

Starting at noon, the community can bring their donations to either the Springside Sportsmen Club Hatchery on Main Street or to the Slatington Trailhead where the Slatington Lion’s Club will host a Christmas tree sale and Santa will arrive at 1 p.m.

“Bring the kids or pets for a picture,” she said.

A bird feeder craft for kids will be held. Hot chocolate and lunch specials will be available at the trailhead stand and Sal’s Pizza.

“It’s just about community getting together to show there are good people in this world,” she said.

The project will run through the end of the year. Anyone wishing to donate can bring items to either location.

“This is the first year and next year we are hoping to make it bigger and better.”

Any item left after the end of December will be laundered and taken to the Allentown church.
